Science

All children are curious about what is happening around them.  They are actively involved in science from the time they begin in nursery.  Our aim is to encourage children to explore and investigate materials, objects and their surroundings to help them find out about the world in which they live.  This will involve making observations and problem solving.  The work is aimed at building up scientific skills and concepts.  The National Curriculum outlines the content of what is taught.  These areas are:

Life and living processes (in the environment)
  • Human
  • Animal
  • Plant
Physical processes
  • Forces and motion
  • Energy
  • Earth and space
  • Electricity and magnetism
  • Light and dark
  • Sound and hearing
Materials and their properties
  • Solids, liquids and gases
  • Grouping and classifying materials
  • Sorting and changing materials
  • Dissolving, irreversible and reversible changes
  • Separating mixtures of materials

Our aim is to provide children with opportunities to increase scientific knowledge and skills to ensure that all children achieve the highest possible standards.
